64 years ago today, my parents said ‘I do.’
And somehow, 64 years on, they still stand by that promise.
Today is my parents’ 64th wedding anniversary, which is an incredible milestone.
Let's think about what 64 years actually means.
When they got married in 1962, there was no internet, Google, Facebook, mobile phones, online shopping, no GPS, and no websites.
In fact, the very idea of a website was still decades away.
I find that quite amusing because I’ve spent more than 17 years of my own working life designing websites, and I can build a website in a matter of days. Back then, the world didn’t even have the concept of one!
If my Mum and Dad wanted to get in touch with someone, they picked up a telephone or sent a letter. Photos were taken on cameras with film. Holiday planning involved paper maps. News came from newspapers, radio and television.
If they had an argument, there was no disappearing into another room and scrolling through their phones. They had to actually talk to each other and fix things together.
Over those 64 years, they’ve watched the world change almost beyond recognition.
They’ve seen colour television arrive. Men walk on the Moon. Computers become part of everyday life. They’ve seen the internet transform how we work and communicate, and how smartphones means everyone has a computer in their pocket.
And through all that change, one thing has remained beautifully constant: They’ve built a life together. They’ve raised a family. They’ve supported each other.
My parents have lived in three countries, they’ve holidayed all over the world, shared adventures, challenges, celebrations, laughter, and disappointments.
Because 64 years of marriage isn’t about having a perfect relationship.
It’s about having a real one.
It’s about growing older together.
It’s about knowing someone’s life history because you were there for so much of it.
It’s about compromise, patience, forgiveness and, perhaps more than anything, choosing each other… Every Single Day.
I’m incredibly lucky to still have both my parents - who are now in their 80’s and 90’s, and thankfully both extremely fit and healthy - so today I’m celebrating not just their anniversary, but the extraordinary life they have created together.
Because when they got married, there wasn't a website to announce their engagement. There wasn't social media to share their wedding photos. There wasn't a Google search to find out how to make a marriage last.
They just got married, and figured out the rest of it together.
Happy Wedding Anniversary to my, Mum and Dad! That’s 64 years done and dusted, with loads more fun, happiness, and mischief still to come!
